Anxiety & Panic Attacks

Anxiety is a natural survival mechanism that motivates us to act

We all need to experience some degree of anxiety at times; it’s a natural survival mechanism that motivates us to act. It would be unnatural not to feel some of its symptoms – a pounding heart, dry mouth, knotted stomach – just before a big speech or exam, for instance. It locks and focuses our attention to help us achieve our best.

But sometimes anxiety can start to interfere with our daily life.

Perhaps we find that worries stop us falling asleep, that we have particularly vivid dreams or that we wake feeling some of those anxious symptoms. And we end up feeling low and exhausted.

We might notice we have difficulty concentrating and making decisions, even apparently simple ones. That we’re distracted and unable to give our partner or children the attention and support we feel they deserve.

Maybe we find ourselves short-tempered at work or with friends and struggling to enjoy things we used to love doing.

This level of anxiety may build slowly, perhaps following the breakdown of a relationship, or it might occur suddenly following a traumatic experience – witnessing or being involved in a violent attack for instance.

Or there may be no obvious cause. Clients often tell me they don’t understand why this is happening to them when they have many good things in their lives – a loving partner, friends, a steady job – to be thankful for.

Do you recognise this? Do you want to get back on with life as soon as possible? To sleep better and wake feeling energetic and motivated, to feel better able to be there for your partner, to see things differently and improve your effectiveness at work and relationships with colleagues?

Do you have repetitive negative thoughts? “I’ll never be good enough!”, “My boss always doubts me!”

Do you find yourself ruminating on things from the past, often for no apparent reason, and tend to blame yourself when setbacks happen?

Do you worry a lot about future events, usually assuming the worst? “it’s going to be awful!”

The emotional effects of anxiety are horrible and can leave us feeling out of control and at a loss as to how to begin to make change.

But this experience is far more common than you might think. And most people I see say they’re able to make lasting changes after just a few sessions.

HUMAN GIVENS THERAPY

I offer a brief-therapy approach, typically taking six sessions, which means it’s affordable and not unduly time-consuming.

We’ll decide together after each session whether you want to come back for more, you will never be obliged to book a series of sessions.

I always aim to help you start feeling better from our very first session. I’ll take time to listen and to understand your emotions, but we won’t dwell on them, because it’s not necessary to feel worse before you can feel better.

We’ll focus on getting your needs met, identifying your own strengths and resources, and setting positive, achievable goals. You’ll learn techniques to help you relax, challenge your negative thoughts, use your imagination in a positive way and find better ways to respond to stress; so that you can start to sleep better, boost your energy, be there for your partner and feel calmer and more effective at work.

We’ll rehearse success so that you leave each session fully equipped to start making positive change and getting back on track.

You can view my profile – MHGI, HG.Dip.P. – on the Human Givens Therapist Register here and be assured that I work in accordance with the Human Givens Code of Conduct and Ethical Foundations which you can see here. I have full professional indemnity insurance.

You can find out how Human Givens differs from other therapy approaches here.
